"Why should you particularly like a man who resembles you? There is nothing in you to like; you know that. Ah, confound you! What a change you have made in yourself! A good reason for taking to a man, that he shows you what you have fallen away from, and what you might have been! Change places with him, and would you have been looked at by those blue eyes as he was, and commiserated by that agitated face as he was? Come on, and have it out in plain words! You hate the fellow."
I think that this quote could mean that you should step into another person's shoes. The first part of this quote could mean that if you don't like anything in yourself then why would you like someone who is like you. The second part could mean that you should step into the other person's shoes and see it their way and if you saw what they saw then you might hate yourself too. I think the significance in this quote would be that to not judge someone until you see their point of view.

SQUID on Book 2, Ch. 1-3
"To be confronted with such pity, and such earnest youth and beauty, was far more trying to the accused than to be confronted with all the crowd. Standing, as it were, apart with her on the edge of his grave, not all the staring curiosity that looked on, could, for the moment, nerve him to remain quite still. His hurried right hand parcelled out the herbs before him into imaginary beds of flowers in a garden; and his efforts to control and steady his breathing shook the lips from which the colour rushed to his heart. The buzz of the great flies was loud again."
I think that this means that they believe that she had contact with the prisoner and even though she is a pretty person and she's very young and then she is being confronted with pity. The location of this seems as if it is in a courtroom. I think that this means that when you're being confronted about your youth and your beauty by pity then that is worse than just being confronted by everyone in a crowd.

SQUID Ch. 5-6, Book 1
"The time was to come, when that wine too would be spilled on the street-stones, and when the stain of it would be red upon many there."
I think that this quote means that the farther something spreads with time, the larger the influence will become. This quote gives background information about how people enjoyed a gift when they get one during those times. I think this is important because whenever something good happens to you, don't let it influence you too much otherwise the gift can become something that you wish didn't happen to you.

SQUID Ch. 2-4, Book 1
"A WONDERFUL fact to reflect upon, that every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to each other. A solemn consideration, which I enter a great city by night, that every one of those darkly clustered houses encloses its own secret; that every room in every one of them encloses its own secret; that every beating heart in the hundreds of thousands of breasts there, is, in some of its imaginings, a secret to the heart nearest it!"
I think that this quote means that everything has its own secret no matter where its found. Everyone has its own secret that they keep from others, it could be a fear, it could be something in the past, it could be something that they're still dealing with, or it could even be something that could happen later in their life, others will try to discover and understand the secret. This quote could give background on the characters in the book and Dickens could possibly relate his own personal experiences with this. This is important because this could help the plot of the story. For example, if a character is having emotional breakdown possibly another character could console to that character which would help the relationships between the characters in the book. This is an important factor to relationships because if you can understand them and help them if it is needed then the relationship can become stronger.

SQUID on Book 1, Chapter 1
"It was the year of Our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy-five. Spiritual revelations were conceded to England at that favoured period, as at this. Mrs. Southcott had recently attained her five-and-twentieth blessed birthday, of whom a prophetic private in the Life Guards had heralded the sublime appearance by announcing hat arrangements were made for the swallowing up of London and Westminster. Even the Cock-lane ghost had been laid only a round dozen of years, after rapping out its messages, as the spirits of this very last year past (supernaturally deficient in originality) rapped out theirs. Mere messages in the earthly order of events had lately come to the English Crown and People, from a congress of British subjects in America: which, strange to relate, have proved more important to the human race than any communications yet received through any of the chickens of the Cock-lane brood. " Book I, Ch. 1, p.1
This quote helps you further explore the details about the setting. An example of this would be where it talks about how the Cock-lane brood and Mrs. Southcott both recently acquired their 25 years of age. With this passage we also know that this story takes place in the year of 1775. This quote also shows that maybe the characters in this story believe in superstition due to the "Cock-lane ghost". The messages that the Cock-lane ghost delivered who was gone for around 12 years didn't seem as important as the ones from the British people who lived in America that were considered more earthly.
